"I hate when I say I could have made that and stupid art nerds say 'but you didn't'. it's so cringe"

but that's literally true. you didn't make that art.

take Barnett Newman's art for example. you didn't make it because you literally couldn't make it. you were not a Jew who lived during the holocaust. you did not experience two world wars before you turned fifty. you did not experience all this suffering and death all around you. you did not witness your people face genocide at the hands of fascism. you did not read about two atomic bombs dropping in the newspaper the week it happened while it was celebrated like a victory. you didn't become so jaded and disillusioned by the immense hatred of modern and surrealist art that you decided to make art that is so intrinsically tied to the Jewish experience with a modern twist, such as what he calls his "zips" being both the pillar of fire from the Tanakh and the flash of an atom bomb. you couldn't have made art that invoked such a negative reaction that to make an entire series of paintings as a response to specifically call out the people who are afraid of modern minimalist art.

sure, you could draw a blue line on a red canvas. but it won't have the same meaning behind it that Newman's art does.

don't let that discourage you, though. if you think "I could have done that" maybe you couldn't have specifically done THAT, but you can make something similar. you can put your thoughts and emotions into your art. you can make your art say something. you can't make Newman's art. but he couldn't make your art. because your art is yours, and Newman's art is Newman's. no one can make art the exact same way as someone else. every single brush stroke, every single line, every single thought put into planning is always different. there are never any two pieces of art that are exactly the same. it's always unique. just like you.

don't say "I could have made that". say "I could make something like that". let art be an inspiration, not a challenge to copy. you are a unique individual. your experiences and life and emotions are different from everyone else. so every single work of art you make is 100% yours and 100% unique.

tbh, i dont get the self regulation thing autistic people do. i dont get how stimming regulates anyone? because i dont do it myself, i never have since i was a wee child, so i know for a fact i dont do that.

im confused by it, like how does one moving around, or rocking, whatever it may be, regulate? what does it even mean im actually confused o.o

autistic-af answered:

Honest questions: you ever click a pen while thinking?

Ever tap your fingers on the table while bored?

Ever jiggle your leg while nervous?

Those are all self-regulatory stims.

Everybody stims.

Autistics are just less likely to be constrained by social standards and stim in ways that help the individual. That may be rocking, hand flapping, humming, nodding, face scrunching etc.

Movement can help add or remove stimulation.

When you’re clicking your pen to think, the sound and movement and beat that you’re creating is helping to block out outside stimulus.

Leg bouncing helps you remove energy and reduce an unpleasant sensation.

I rock because it helps create a feeling inside of me that I find pleasant. That pleasant feeling blocks out negative sensory input I’m experiencing.

Et cetera.

Add in the fact that many (not all) Autistics struggle with emotional regulation, and stimming becomes extremely important to help regulate sensations we may not have a term for yet. All we know is we don’t like it or maybe want more of it.

a lot of the time, if I don’t stim I feel like I’m going to explode. like autistic-af said, a lot of autistic people have emotional dysregulation issues. for me, this means that my emotions all feel so BIG that they can’t be contained inside my body. so I flap, or clap my hands, or spin in circles, and it helps me to release the excess energy

and then, sometimes it’s that it makes me feel more in control of sensory input. if there’s a lot going on, stimming can “cancel out” the distressing input. clicking my fingers or tapping the side of my head gives me a single source of controlled input to focus on, instead of being overwhelmed by all the uncontrolled input

a lot of the time, it’s harder to pinpoint why I need to do it, I just do. pacing helps me to think, moving my hands helps me to remember things, etc etc. these are the types of things that almost everyone does though — human beings tend to embody our thoughts and emotions, autistic people just do it more and/or differently

Honestly, if you take it wide enough, "stimming" is why humans have hobbies and why animals have fun.

Knitting can be stimming.

Running/jogging can be stimming.

Taking looooong showers can be a method of emotional regulation. <- anything can be used for emotional regulation, and a lot of it is actually not just socially accepted but even "advertised".

For example: how often have you come across someone being suggested to "take a hot long bubble bath after a long tiring day"?

Or how often have you seen/read about people "having a glass of wine after a hard day"?

Those things are "regulating emotions" in the way that they help make one emotion go away and/or/by releasing a different emotion.

That's why your* grandmother used to humm while doing laundry, btw.

*not yours personally, more like 'the grandma in all those cutesy stories about someones childhood'

autistic-af

Cat zoomies are emotional regulation. This is law.

Love when ppl condescendingly say 'just stop using twitter!' like me and hundreds of other self employed creatives don't rely on traffic and revenue from these sites, like this isnt going to harm a huge subset of people but "lol just stop using twitter lol :)"

softwaring

just makes me sad cause i literally got my magic the gathering jobs bc someone saw my art and said they’d look good as cards while tagging em and it happened like people rly don’t understand the impact twitter has on creative industries

ID: A photoset of four Sonic the Hedgehog drawings, each featuring characters using disability aids. First is of Tails, who is sitting in a blue wheelchair with a seat designed to look like an arcade carpet, and stickers on the wheels. He is smiling with a blue tablet device in his hands, and is wearing a red shirt with white and blue striped sleeves and yellow shorts. The illustration has a softer tone.

Second features Silver and Shadow posing rebelliously. Silver has blue and white crutches decorated with smiles, hearts, music notes, and futuristic symbols. He wears a yellow shirt, a pink fluffy vest, a purple sash, green baggy pants with a yellow smiley face, a peace sign, and two hearts, with pink and blue frills at the bottom, along with kandi jewelry, earrings including a rainbow flower, and his canon boots. His fur is made to look like hair in two ponytails that go a little past his shoulders, streaked with pink and purple. Shadow has a red cane with black designs including danger signs, lightning, a cat, a Chao, and the Black Arms symbol. He wears a white shirt with red and black sleeves, a black leather vest, black Tripp pants with red pockets, gold chains and zippers, earrings including a gold star dangle, a pink and purple belt, his canon shoes, and pink eyeshadow. He is flipping off the camera. The drawing is green and blue tinted, the background is of trees and bushes.

Third features Rouge and Wave in front of a purple city skyline with yellow stripes behind them and a starry purple sky. Rouge has a hand under her chin and is looking to the side in a magenta shirt, white, black and pink vest, black skirt and boots, white fingerless gloves, and silver jewelry with purple eyeshadow, and she is using pink crutches with white designs including diamonds, hearts, and stars. She also has two knee braces that match her outfit with pink hearts on them, and her wings are spread out. Next to her is Wave, standing with her hand on her hip and facing the right. She wears her white bandana and yellow sunglasses on her forehead, a black tank, white short-sleeved sweater, red cargo shorts, white, purple, and pink sneakers, yellow socks, and has a robotic prosthetic leg, which is white and purple.

Last is two simple drawings in flat and light colors. First is Knuckles, facing the left and wearing his Sonic OVA hat with a poncho that is the same color. He has green sunglasses on and his dreads moved slightly to reveal a hearing aid. An arrow points to the glasses, reading "sunglasses for sensory issues plus headaches". Another points to the hearing aid simply reading "hearing aid". Right of the page has Shadow and Rouge asleep on Omega's shoulders, Shadow curled up and Rouge laying back and snoring. Both have little Z's over their head. An arrow points to Shadow, reading "chronic fatigue", and one points to Rouge, reading "chronic pain". A final arrow points to Omega, who is drawn half-up, and reads "will kill anyone that mocks his teammates". END ID

Didn’t see any posts about it so here it is for the other Photosensitive folks,

Nimona has a lot of flashing lights, no intense strobing (ie Incredibles) but includes:

Alarm sequences (red lights, ‘police’ lights), explosions and gunfire

Sparks/flashing/flickering lights, firelight

Thunderstorms and lightning effects,

Flashes from color to black (hard to describe)

All within the first few minutes of the movie, frequently throughout.

It wasn’t too terrible when I watched with other lights on during the day but I tried watching it with them off and it was pretty bad. Sharing this so other people can find it would be much appreciated!
